BT Broadband and My Own Modem

Can I use my own modem with BT Broadband?

Although you may use any broadband (ADSL / DSL) modem to connect to the BT Broadband service, BT Technical Support will NOT support any modem related issues (with the exception of No DSL Sync issues) and there is no guarantee that the modem will work reliably.

BT supplied modems have been extensively tested to ensure a reliable connection and are preconfigured for the BT Broadband service. The setup and any issues relating to non-BT-supplied equipment are not supported by BT, please refer to the documentation that came with your device or contact the relevant manufacturer for support.

If you intend to use your own modem, you will need to ensure that it supports PPPoE (Point to Point over Ethernet), and enter the correct settings which can be found below.

If you experience problems with your own modem and need to contact Broadband Technical Support, please check whether the DSL, DSL Sync or CD light is lit on the modem before you call. To find out which light this is, or if the issue lies with the installation or connection of the modem to the computer, you will need to consult the documentation that came with the modem or contact the manufacturer.

If the DSL, DSL Sync, CD or Internet light is lit, then the modem is physically connected correctly to the phoneline, if not, check the connection to the phone socket. If you received a ZyXEL or Voyager modem and still have it, try connecting that to your computer to check whether you can connect to the Internet.
