Connect a computer to a router using an Ethernet cable

How do I connect my computer to my router using Ethernet?

If you're new to BT Broadband and setting up your broadband connection for the first time, we strongly recommend you follow the instructions in your BT Broadband Quick Start Guide to install your broadband router and connect your computer.

If you have previously set up your broadband connection and would now like to connect your computer using Ethernet the steps below will help you do this:

 

What you need:

  • A spare Ethernet port on your computer
  • A spare Ethernet port on your router
  • An Ethernet cable.

An Ethernet cable is generally yellow or white with yellow ends and the connector looks like this:

The Ethernet port is normally marked LAN or 

 

How to connect…

  • Turn off your computer
  • Unplug any existing USB cable between your computer and router
  • Plug one end of the Ethernet cable into your computer, and the other into the router or hub
  • Restart your computer

 

Check your network settings (Windows Vista)

  1. Click Start and select Control Panel
  2. Select Network and Sharing Center
  3. Choose Manage Network Connections from the left hand menu
  4. Right click on the Local Area Connection icon and select Properties
  5. The Properties window should display a ticked item - "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)". Highlight this option and select Properties
  6. Ensure the following are both checked
    • Obtain an IP address automatically
    • Obtain DNS server address automatically
  7. Select OK then OK again.
  8. Open a web browser and start surfing the Internet.

 

Check your network settings (Windows XP)

  1. Click Start and select Control Panel
  2. Select Network Connections
  3. Right click on the Local Area Connection icon and select Properties
  4. The Properties window should display a ticked item - "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)". Highlight this option and select Properties
  5. Ensure the following are both checked
    • Obtain an IP address automatically
    • Obtain DNS server address automatically
  6. Select OK then OK again.
  7. Open a web browser and start surfing the Internet.
