Cannot send Emails since switching to BT
Since changing to a BT Internet connection why can I not send Email?
To use an email address of another Internet Service Provider (ISP) with a BT Internet connection all you will need to do is adjust the settings of your email program.
If having recently changed to a BT Internet connection you now find you are unable to send email you will need to change your outgoing SMTP server details accordingly.
The outgoing mail (SMTP) server address for a BT Broadband or Dial-up connection is mail.iol.ie
If you use Outlook Express to manage your emails then please follow the instructions below.
- Open Outlook Express.
- At the top of the page click on Tools > Accounts.
- Click on the Mail tab.
- Highlight your email account, click on Properties.
- Click on the Servers tab.
- Change your SMTP server details to mail.iol.ie
- Click Apply > OK > Close.
- Close and then re-open Outlook Express.
You should now be able to send email once again.
If you are also changing from a dial-up to a broadband connection you may also need to adjust the connection type. For more information click here.
Microsoft Outlook 2003 instructions below
- Open Outlook 2003.
- On the Toolbar, click Tools and select E-mail Accounts from the menu.
- Select View or change existing e-mail accounts.
- Click Next to continue.
- Highlight the account you would like to edit and click Change.
- Locate the Server Information fields.
- Change the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) address to mail.iol.ie
- Click Next then Finish.
- Close and then re-open Outlook 2003.
You should now be able to send emails once again.
Mac Mail 2.0 (Tiger) instructions below
- Open Mac Mail.
- On the Toolbar, click Mail and select Preferences from the drop-down menu.
- The Accounts window opens.
- In the Accounts column, highlight the account you'd like to edit.
- To the right, select the Account Information tab.
- Click the Server Settings button.
- Change the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) address to mail.iol.ie
- Click the OK button.
- Close the Accounts window and click Save to apply the change.
You should now be able to send emails once again.
