How do I change the SMTP setting of my email application?

If having recently changed your Internet Service Provider (ISP) by moving location (e.g. a friend's house or hotel etc.) and  you now find you are unable to send email, then you will need to change your outgoing SMTP server details accordingly.

The outgoing mail (SMTP) server address for a BT Broadband or Dialup connection is mail.iol.ie - this server will allow you to send email if and only if you are currently connected to the Internet with BT Ireland. If you have changed ISP then substitute the BT Ireland SMTP for your current ISP's setting in the instructions below.

For users of Outlook Express...

  1. Open Outlook Express.
  2. At the top of the page click on ToolsAccounts.
  3. Click on the Mail tab.
  4. Highlight your email account, click on Properties.
  5. Click on the Servers tab.
  6. Change your SMTP server details to mail.iol.ie (or the setting provided by your current ISP)
  7. Click Apply > OK > Close.
  8. Close and then re-open Outlook Express.

For users of Microsoft Outlook 2003...

  1. Open Outlook 2003.
  2. At the top of the page click on ToolsE-mail Accounts.
  3. Select 'View or change existing e-mail accounts' > Click Next to continue.
  4. Highlight the account you'd like to edit and click Change.
  5. On the E-mail Accounts screen find the Server Information section.
  6. Change your SMTP server details to mail.iol.ie (or the setting provided by your current ISP)
  7. Click Next > Finish.
  8. Close and then re-open Outlook 2003.
