How can I ensure that my wireless connection is secure?

Wireless routers use various security technologies to prevent unauthorised users connecting to the Internet over your wireless network.

The BT Voyager 2110 Wireless routers is preset with WEP wireless security and is protected by a key known as a wireless network key.

WEP security offers protection against unwanted connections on a typical home/small office network. However, if you are concerned about security, there are further measures you can take to enhance the integrity of your wireless network.

  1. Use sensible security on your network
    • Set network passwords and change them regularly
    • Use firewall and antivirus software to protect your computers. BT Voyager routers include a built-in hardware firewall.
    • If you enable file sharing on your computer, do not share your system files and protect shared folders with a password
    • If you have sensitive information (e.g. in a corporate environment), you should use VPN type (Virtual Private Network) technology to protect your data. Follow guidelines from your company's network administrator

Please refer to your operating system’s help files for more details

  2. Change the wireless security of your router to WPA

  3. Improving security when using WEP

If you are not able to change your security to WPA, consider changing your wireless network key on a regular basis to minimise the risk of hacking. This can be done through the router configuration manager that came with your equipment. Refer to the documentation that came with your router.

    Important
: If you change the wireless network key on your router, you also have to change the configuration of all your wireless devices such as computers, games consoles, etc; otherwise they will not be able to connect to your wireless network.
