Cannot send Emails since switching to BT

Since changing to a BT Internet connection why can I not send Email?

To use an email address of another Internet Service Provider (ISP) with a BT Internet connection all you will need to do is adjust the settings of your email program.


If having recently changed to a BT Internet connection you now find you are unable to send email you will need to change your outgoing SMTP server details accordingly.


The outgoing mail (SMTP) server address for a BT Broadband or Dial-up connection is


If you use Outlook Express to manage your emails then please follow the instructions below.

  1. Open Outlook Express.
  2. At the top of the page click on ToolsAccounts.
  3. Click on the Mail tab.
  4. Highlight your email account, click on Properties.
  5. Click on the Servers tab.
  6. Change your SMTP server details to
  7. Click Apply > OK > Close.
  8. Close and then re-open Outlook Express.

You should now be able to send email once again.


If you are also changing from a dial-up to a broadband connection you may also need to adjust the connection type. For more information click here.



Microsoft Outlook 2003 instructions below

  1. Open Outlook 2003.
  2. On the Toolbar, click Tools and select E-mail Accounts from the menu.
  3. Select View or change existing e-mail accounts.
  4. Click Next to continue.
  5. Highlight the account you would like to edit and click Change.
  6. Locate the Server Information fields.
  7. Change the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) address to
  8. Click Next then Finish.
  9. Close and then re-open Outlook 2003.

You should now be able to send emails once again.



Mac Mail 2.0 (Tiger) instructions below

  1. Open Mac Mail.
  2. On the Toolbar, click Mail and select Preferences from the drop-down menu.
  3. The Accounts window opens.
  4. In the Accounts column, highlight the account you'd like to edit.
  5. To the right, select the Account Information tab.
  6. Click the Server Settings button.
  7. Change the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) address to
  8. Click the OK button.
  9. Close the Accounts window and click Save to apply the change.

You should now be able to send emails once again.
